Appling-Winfield - Doris Elizabeth Cummings, 97, passed away on the morning of Friday, September 27, 2024.

Doris was born in the former German city of Gumbinnen, East Prussia, on February 5, 1927.

Doris is survived by: Sons Charles C. Cummings (Beverly) and Jack L. Cummings, Jr (Selwyn); grandchildren Robby Cummings and Heather Long; brother Gerd Igogeit, of Hameln, Germany and sister Ute Rief, of Berlin Germany; nephews Franke Igogeit and Fabian Rief, and nieces Christine Seideman (Wolfgang) of Leer, Germany, and Nadine Igogeit of Berlin, Germany.

Doris is predeceased by son Robert Donald Cummings, parents Adolf and Elizabeth Igogeit, brother Dietmar Igogeit, and sister Christel Obst.

At the early age of 15, Doris attended teacher's college in Salzburg, Austria, until her studies were interrupted by the war.  She relocated to Bad Kissingen, Germany where, due to her competence in English, she served as an interpreter for the U.S. Army.  She married a young American soldier, Jack Cummings (CSM Ret.-Deceased) and moved to Enid, Oklahoma.  Following her husband on numerous assignments stateside and abroad, she settled with the family in Winfield, Georgia.  Doris attended Augusta College where she earned her Bachelors and Master's in Education, then resumed her passion for teaching by working until retirement in the Columbia County school system.  Her years of retirement were spent tending to her beloved Georgia woods in Winfield and reading classical literature, philosophy and political journals.

Doris is predeceased by son Robert Donald Cummings, her parents, Adolf and Elizabeth Igogeit, brother Dietmar Igogeit, and sister Christel Obst.

The family thanks the medical staff of AU Health, Allay Hospice of Thomson, Georgia, and caregiver Evelyn Smith for their professional and kind care.

Private service to be held by the family at a later date. Beggs Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Thomson, Georgia is honored to serve the family of Doris Elizabeth Cummings.
