Donnie Smith, Jr.

Donnie Smith Jr., 73 of Hephzibah, Ga. passed away on Monday, September 30, 2024, in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Born on January 17, 1951, in Greensboro, North Carolina, Donnie's life was a testament to the values of kindness, adventure, and friendship that he held dear. Donnie's early years were spent in Augusta, moving there when he was about 3 years old for his father to run Claussen's Bakery. He later moved to the Amity community of Lincoln County and attended Lincolnton High School. His strong sense of duty led him to serve in the U.S. Army for two years, an experience that instilled in him a deep sense of patriotism and camaraderie. His industrious spirit and leadership skills were further showcased during his tenure with Steve Duffie Construction, where he was a respected supervisor overseeing pipe crews for underground utilities. Donnie's expertise contributed to the development of numerous subdivisions, ensuring communities had access to essential water and sewer lines. Later, he continued his career in transportation, driving for McCannon Granite where his reliability and friendly demeanor made him a favorite among his colleagues. Donnie's life was not all work; he had a passion for the great outdoors. Camping and fishing were among his favorite pastimes, activities that allowed him to share moments of joy and tranquility with his family and friends. His love for adventure often found him exploring new spots to cast a line or set up camp, creating memories that would last a lifetime. Those who knew Donnie would describe him as the epitome of friendliness. His kind heart and willingness to lend a hand were traits that endeared him to many. Donnie's adventurous spirit was contagious, inspiring those around him to seek out the beauty and excitement in life's journey. Donnie is survived by his devoted wife, Stephanie Gibson Smith, and his children, who were the pride and joy of his life. He is survived by his son, Donnie Anthony (Tony) Smith and wife Gina of Lincolnton; daughter, Melody Smith Richardson and husband, Moran, of Augusta; and stepdaughter, Sydney Gibson, of Hephzibah. His grandchildren, Donnie A. Smith Jr., Trenton Richardson, Tristan Smith, Chelsea Richardson, Alexis Smith, Morgan Smith, Connor Smith, Hadley Grace Smith, and Kai Rodriguez, as well as his great-grandchild, Little Little Donnie, will forever cherish the wisdom and love he imparted. Donnie was preceded in death by his son, Brandon Smith, and his first wife, Angie Smith. The void left by their absence was deeply felt, yet Donnie's strength and love for his family never wavered.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, October 20, 2024 at 3:30 pm at Martin's Crossroads Congregational Holiness Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon beginning at 2:30 pm until the hour of the service at the church.
