Clarence Vernon Bouknight

MSGT Clarence Vernon Bouknight US Air Force Ret. passed away peacefully on January 15, 2024, in Lincolnton, Georgia. He was 77 years old.

Born on March 16, 1946, in West Columbia, South Carolina to the late George W. and Maris Buff Bouknight, Clarence was a graduate of Brookland Cayce High School. His commitment to service was evident throughout his distinguished career in the United States Air Force where he served in Tokyo, Okinawa, the Philippines, and Vietnam, retiring as a Master Sergeant. He was recipient of the Air Force Commendation Medal and Meritorious Service Award.

Since 1986, Clarence called Lincolnton his home, and he also retired from a fulfilling role at Elijah Clark State Park.

A man of faith, Clarence was a charter member of The Lutheran Church By The Lake in McCormick, where he was a regular presence in the choir, sharing his melodious voice with the congregation as recently as the past Sunday morning. His commitment to his faith and community shone brightly through his service to the Lincoln County Historical Society. Clarence's dedication to the Society's mission was unwavering, and his work with the Wednesday morning group was instrumental in bringing numerous projects to fruition. Clarence's skillful hands were often seen operating his beloved tractor, whether it was moving dirt, brush, picnic tables, or digging trenches. His efforts were vital in the installation of the drain line and septic tank for the Wright House, cutting limbs, or improving the park's drainage. His expertise also extended to running and maintaining the sawmill for an extended period, where he took great care in sharpening the blade and ensuring its upkeep. A friend to everyone he met, Clarence's wise guidance and steadfast presence on the Board of Directors of the Historical Society were invaluable. His ability to provide a steady hand on the Society's tiller will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure of working alongside him.

Clarence is survived by his devoted wife, Ikuko Motohashi Bouknight, his loving sister, Faye Ergle of Modoc, SC, and numerous nieces and nephews whom he adored as if they were his own children. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Horace Bouknight, John Bouknight, Lois Watson, and Grace Corley.
