Gibson, GA -Mr. Charles L. Black, Sr.

Charles L. Black Sr, age 88, died on Friday, December 30, 2016 at The Mann House  Assisted Living Home in Atlanta, Georgia. He was preceded by his parents, Addie Lee McCoy Black and William ("Billy") Lawson Black, and three brothers: Joseph Thomas ("J.T") Black Sr, William ("Bill") Brent Black,  and Dewey Jerome Black.  Charles was married for 62 years to Mattie Will Irby and they had three children.  Charles worked for over thirty-five years in the dairy processing business as a supervisor and manager at Atlanta Dairies and other divisions of Dean Foods in Atlanta Georgia. Following retirement, he returned home to Glasscock County to live his dream of owning a farm and raising beef cattle.  He was known to be frugal and let nothing go to waste.  He believed in hard work.  He was actively working cattle and maintaining rental properties he owned until age 84, when he suffered a stroke.  He was a man of faith. A life-long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, and he was ordained an Elder and a Seventy. He did not hesitate to share his belief in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

He is survived by three brothers and two sisters: James Marion ("Andy") Black,  Leon Lindon Black (wife, Hazel) and Billy Ray Black of Augusta, GA, Betty Faye Kent of Orem, UT, and Sarah Frances McKnight of Murfreesboro, TN.  He is also survived by his wife Mattie and three children: Charles L. Black Jr., Temple Faye Walling (husband, Mark) and David L. Black (wife, Denise), six of seven total grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and a large number nephews and nieces.

Services will be held on Saturday January 7, 2017 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 470 North Louisville Street, Harlem GA 30814.  The viewing will be from 9 am – 10 am.  Funeral services are at 10 am, with interment at the family cemetery in Edge Hill, GA.  The repast will be held at the Black's home: 6980 GA Hwy 171, Gibson, GA 30810 (just a half mile south of the cemetery).
