Byron Smith Baldwin Sr.

Colonel Byron S. Baldwin, Sr. (U.S. Army, Retired), a man of unwavering faith, passed away peacefully at his home in Lincolnton, Georgia, on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at the age of 86. Byron was born on March 1, 1939, in Caddo, KY to Francis and Frances (née Smith) Baldwin. After attending Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, CA, Byron continued his education at the United States Military Academy, graduating in 1961, and later completed his studies at The Army War College in 1984. Byron's 30-year career in the US Army was marked by distinguished military service, with assignments that took him to Thailand, Vietnam, two tours in Taiwan and South Korea, and various posts across the United States, including Fort Rucker (AL), Fort Leavenworth (KS), and Fort Monmouth (NJ). His personal decorations included the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and the Defense Superior Service Medal. Despite his military accolades, Byron would say that his greatest achievement was marrying the love of his life, Helen Pierce Nuckols, on July 4, 1963, and raising their amazing family of four children together. The couple retired to Lincolnton, GA in 1994. A committed Christian, Byron was a dedicated follower of Jesus. Throughout his life he served as a youth group leader, Sunday school teacher and superintendent, lay leader, beloved choir member and a church trustee. Byron and Helen were founding members of Crossroads Fellowship Church in Augusta, GA, where they attended for over two decades. Byron rarely met a dog he didn't like, and the Baldwin's rural homestead quickly became the local canine rescue for many years. No summary of his life would be complete without mentioning his loyal dog, Gabe, who was with him when he passed. Byron Baldwin is survived by his lifelong love of 62 years, Helen Baldwin; his children, Kimberly Radford (Colin) of Toamasina, Madagascar; Byron Baldwin Jr, Lincolnton, GA; Susan Mullens (John), Bonaire, GA; and David Baldwin (Monica), Virginia Beach, VA. He leaves behind his siblings, Karol Seehaus and David Baldwin (Kim), and dearly-loved third daughter, Patricia Wang (John). Byron is also survived by 13 grandchildren: Karen Mullens, Sarah Clark (Myers), Alec Baldwin (Frances), Jay Mullens (Jenna), Angelo Radford, Sean Baldwin, David Baldwin, Peter Mullens, Julia Nomenjanahary, Kitika Prosper, Rafily Tianaina, Nathan Mullens, Micah Mullens, and great-grandsons, Daniel Baldwin and Asher Mullens. He was predeceased by his sister, Faith Vigil. A celebration of life for Byron will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2026 at the First Assembly of God Church, Lincolnton, GA with details to be announced. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to HELP Madagascar (Health, Education & Life-skills Projects) via check addressed to "HELP Madagascar" (sent to 2625 Chamberlain Ferry Road, Lincolnton, GA 30817) or through PayPal (helpmg@gmail.com).
