Augustus Rhodes Mayo, of Sharon, Georgia was called home, Saturday, February 4, 2023 at the age of 81. After battling a rare form of cancer for 15 years, he died peacefully at home surrounded by his wife and family.
Gus was born to Wade McCline Mayo and Frances Rhodes Rooney on May 3, 1941, in Atlanta, Georgia and was raised by his grandparents, Albert and Allene Moore. He graduated from Alexander Stephens Institute in 1959 in Crawfordville, Georgia and later joined the Army Reserves where he served active duty for 6 months before returning home to Atlanta, Georgia. He remained in the reserves for 6 1/2 years and during that time, he married his high school sweetheart, Martha. Gus worked at Rich's in Atlanta, Georgia for 9 years before returning to Crawfordville, Georgia in 1969. He was a dedicated employee of Augusta Woodlands for 26 years before retiring in 2003.
Gus was an active member of his community where he served on City Council in Sharon, Georgia and was a member of the Masons of Georgia for 53 years. He was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church, served as Sunday School Superintendent, a lay speaker, and sang in the choir. He loved fishing, camping, horseback riding and woodworking, but what he loved the most was spending time with his family.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Martha; three children, Chris Mayo and Sharon Moss of Sharon, Georgia and Wade Mayo (Kendall) of Washington, Georgia; two grandchildren, Carly Mayo (Cameron) of Stapleton, Georgia and Hannah Moss of Elberton, Georgia; brothers, Michael Rooney (Laura), Rob Moore Rooney and Wade H. Mayo (Marlene) and sister, Gina Bailey (Randall), special cousin, Nancy Sisson (Mickey) and numerous other cousins, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held at Beggs Funeral Home, 799 Cobbham Road, Thomson, Georgia on Tuesday, February 7, 2023, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. His memorial service will be held in the Beggs Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, February 8, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Paul Gardner officiating. Following the funeral service, graveside and interment will be held at Sharon Cemetery. Please visit www.beggsfuneralhome.net to sign the family's personal guestbook.
