William Mercer Wheeler
Thomson, GA – Mr. William M. Wheeler, 79, entered into rest June 28, 2018.
Mr. Wheeler was born in Daytona Beach, Florida, the son of the late Henry Mercer Wheeler and the late Lelia Blizzard Wheeler. He grew up in Mt. Vernon, GA and graduated from Mt. Vernon Ailey High School, attended GA Military College, and graduated from Mercer University Law School in 1962. Mr. Wheeler served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and attained the rank of Captain with the Judge Advocate General’s Corps. He moved to Thomson in 1966 where he practiced law until his retirement in 2014. Mr. Wheeler previously taught the 7th grade Sunday School class at Thomson First United Methodist Church and was a member of the Holy Cross Episcopal Church. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his beloved wife of 57 years, Sibley Fleming Wheeler.
Survivors include his daughters, Sally W. Phillips (Tim) of Thomson, GA and Lynn Godwin (Charles) of Lake City, SC; grandchildren, Will Phillips (Rebecca), Sarah Ann Phillips Walden (Chase), Chase Godwin, and Mary Sibley Godwin; and great grandchildren, Sibley Phillips and Tripp Walden.
A memorial service will be held at 3 o’clock p.m., Sunday, July 1, 2018 at Holy Cross Episcopal Church with Father Ray Whiting and Father Irwin Veale officiating.
