Stanley Wheatley Obituary

Mr. Lewis Stanley Wheatley, 95 of Wheatley Rd., Washington, Ga. entered into rest on Friday, December 20, 2019 at his residence.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 26, 2019 at 11 am at Rehoboth Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday beginning at 10am until the hour of the service in the church sanctuary.

Mr. Wheatley, son of the late Leonard Bostic and Mattie Maude Thornton Wheatley, was a lifelong resident of Wilkes County. On March 3, 1945, he married the former Katherine Norman of Lincoln County and they were blessed with over 74 years together until her passing in September. They had lived at home independently and he was still driving until just a few months ago. When Mr. Stanley was young, he had operated heavy equipment in his father’s business, LB Wheatley & Sons, a local logging and pond construction business that evolved into Wheatley Brothers Logging and Construction. In addition, he had worked for the US Postal Service as a rural letter carrier for 32 years and cattle farmed until less than two years ago.

He enjoyed making furniture and volunteered his exceptional grilling abilities for many events. Favorites include his stew, and chicken seasoned by his secret recipe.

His family and his church were most important to him. Since he was a child, he had been a faithful member of Rehoboth Baptist Church where he had served as Sunday School Superintendent from 1961 until 1978 and Deacon from 1962. He was the oldest living member of Rehoboth and was proud of his recognition as Deacon Emeritus.

Sometime in the 1920’s, the family held its first Wheatley reunion. He was proud that he had attended every year since then and had been organizing the annual event since the late 1970’s until the present.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his infant son, Robert Allen Wheatley, son, Louis Kenneth Wheatley, grandson, Don Wheatley, Jr. and sister and brothers, Talitha Hopkins, George Wheatley, Thomas Wheatley, and Manuel Wheatley.

Survivors include his sons, Donald Wheatley and wife, Barbara of Blairsville; Norman Wheatley and wife, Marie of Tiger, Ga; daughter, Kathy W. Smith and husband Lyn of Appling; sister, Irene Raffini of Anderson, SC, and seven grandchildren, Jeremy Wheatley, Heather Smith, Carlton Wheatley, Ryan Wheatley, Ben Wheatley, Megan Compton and Leah Fair; six great- grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family is deeply appreciative of the love that was shown to Mr. Wheatley from his caregivers through his illness. They include Elizabeth Lee, Carol Curry, and Doris Heard.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Rehoboth Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 3219 Metasville Rd., Washington, Ga 30673.
